Abstract

The most controversial Shiite book, which considers the possibility of deletion and change in the Ottoman Mushaf as correct, is the book Faṣl al-khiṭāb fī ithbāt taḥrīf kitāb Rabb al-arbāb by Mirza Hossein Nouri(Persian:)(میرزا حسین نوری طبرسی1839 –1902) popularly known as Muhaddith Nouri or Al-Mohaddith Al-Noori). The works written in reaction or rejection of this work, from the middle of the book's authoring year to the death of Muhaddith Nouri, are insignificant. Still, in the contemporary period, many works have dealt with the Faṣl al-khiṭāb. In the meantime, in some of these works, there are also claims and stories about Muhaddith Nouri and his book, which have caused criticism and harsh criticism about the scientific personality of Haji Nouri. One of these stories is the story of the motivation for writing the Faṣl al-khiṭāb; It is said that the British government tricked Muhaddith Nouri into attacking Islam; And the book Faṣl al-khiṭāb was written at the instigation of an employee of the British Embassy. This story has been mentioned by Ayatollah Mar’ashi Najafi, quoting Sardar Kabuli, and by several great contemporary scholars. Now we have to evaluate the truth of the story and answer the existing questions. What was the story of the motivation for writing the Faṣl al-khiṭāb? Is the information in this story compatible with other historical evidence related to Muhaddith Nouri and the Faṣl al-khiṭā? By historical review of the data of the story and analysis of the information and comparing them with the biographies of Sardar Kabuli and Muhaddith Nouri and others with the method of historical study based on criticism, it was found that the English story was the motivation for writing the Faṣl al-khiṭā. And probably, it was mistaken with the story of the book Masalak Al-Mohsenin and Sheikh Fazlullah Nouri.
