Throughout Iranian civilization, spanning from antiquity to the Islamic era, medicine has traversed a consistently dynamic and innovative trajectory. Drawing upon religio-cultural traditions and clinical expertise, ancient Iranian physicians institutionalized the foundations of medicine in fields such as hygiene, surgery, pharmacology, and education. This legacy reached its zenith in the post-Islamic period through towering figures such as Mohammad ibn Zakariyā al-Rāzi, Sayyid Ismāʿil Jorjāni, and Abu ʿAli ibn Sinā, whose systematic works, pedagogical methods, and clinical innovations have had a lasting impact on world medicine. Mohammad ibn Zakariyā al-Rāzi (3rd–4th centuries AH) was among the pioneering physicians who grounded medicine in observation and clinical experience. Subsequently, Ibn Sinā (4th–5th centuries AH) emerged as a towering figure, systematizing this applied science within a philosophical-scientific framework for the first time. His magnum opus, al-Qānun (The Canon of Medicine), is widely regarded as the most comprehensive medical encyclopedia and one of the most significant works of the Middle Ages. For centuries, it was taught in both the East and the West, and was translated into numerous languages. The third side of the triangle is Sayyid Ismāʿil Jorjāni (5th–6th centuries AH), who played a pivotal role in indigenizing and disseminating medical knowledge within the Persian-speaking culture. His name is inextricably linked to the monumental medical encyclopedia, Zakhīrah-i Khwārazmshāhi. As a prominent physician, Jorjāni rendered medical knowledge accessible to Iranian practitioners and students, authoring this Persian encyclopedia to liberate medical education from the dominance of Arabic and other languages. By doing so, he facilitated the dissemination of medical knowledge throughout Iran, ultimately fostering the training and education of successive generations of physicians.
