Abstract

The question of textual resemblance among scholarly works and treatises has long constituted a subject of controversy, and a perennially contentious problem, particularly in the history of science. In this context, Hadiqat al-shi‘a constitute a notable case, as its attribution to Muqaddas Ardabili has been the subject of considerable debate. Hadiqah bears extensive resemblance to Osul al-‘aqā’ed, written by Mir Mohammad Hādi Mirlohi, whose family have been accused of forging Hadiqah. The textual parallels indicate that Hadiqah cannot be the work of Muqaddas Ardabili. Furthermore, the authenticity of the text of Osul al-‘aqā’ed is also seriously called into question. These findings give rise to the hypothesis that one—or possibly both—of these texts may be the product of textual fabrication or plagiarism, having been hastily extracted from another source.
