Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Cultures stands out as one of the most comprehensive and ambitious encyclopedic projects devoted to women’s studies, the Islamic world, and cultures associated with Islam. Published by Brill in six volumes, the encyclopedia represents a landmark achievement in the field. The present article introduces its fourth volume, edited by Suad Joseph and published in 2007 in a volume of 614 pages. This volume addresses such topics as economics, education, mobility, and the lived environments of Muslim women. Distinguished not only by the breadth and diversity of its entries but also by its theoretical self-consciousness regarding the concept of “Islamic culture” and its relationship to the material conditions of women's lives, the volume occupies a particularly significant place within the encyclopedia as a whole.
